Cavity Wall Insulation Glasgow

Cavity wall insulation made its presence known in Glasgow during the 1970s, swiftly becoming the favoured home insulation method by the 1990s, when it was mandated for all new construction projects in the country.

Since then, advancements in materials and installation techniques have revolutionised cavity wall insulation. Modern systems employ cavity wall beads or blown-in mineral wool insulation, ensuring a seamless barrier between external and internal walls that effectively prevents issues like dampness caused by gaps.

Studies have demonstrated that cavity wall insulation can reduce overall heat loss in homes by up to 33%, making it a cornerstone of energy-efficient housing in Glasgow alongside loft insulation.

In this blog, we’ll delve into the energy saving benefits of cavity wall insulation and provide details on government grants available to residents of Glasgow in 2024.

Grants Available For Cavity Wall Insulation in Glasgow?

Navigating the multitude of grants available for cavity wall insulation and home insulation overall can be overwhelming, especially when browsing online.

This blog aims to explain each grant by providing a short breakdown of the funding amount, benefits of each scheme, eligibility criteria, and application process. Our goal is to simplify the large amount of information and options and make it easier for us all to grasp and decide whether to apply.

See lower down on this page more information on each government grant scheme including the criteria for who qualifies.

Does Cavity Wall Insulation Improve EPC Rating?

Cavity wall insulation stands out as the primary home insulation recommendation endorsed by both Home Energy Scotland and The Energy Savings Trust for enhancing your home’s EPC rating. Working in tandem with loft insulation, cavity wall insulation delivers unparalleled heat retention advantages, directly influencing energy performance certificate ratings.

Cavity Wall Insulation Benefits

Cavity wall insulation has been shown to make a 4 to 20 point rating improvement on your homes EPC rating. You are likely thinking this is rather broad range, the impact differs depending on your homes suitability including the walls and floors, your central heating system and fuel type and what other measures you have taken alongside having cavity wall insulation installed.

The up to 33 percent reduction in overall heat loss will result in lower heating bills, especially during the winter when usage increases.

Cavity wall insulation and anything that makes for a well insulated home for that matter, will not only be warmer during the winter, but have cooler air and less fluctuation in temperature during the rest of the year.

Your decreased energy usage by having a better insulated home reduces your carbon footprint, contributing to environmental conservation and sustainability efforts.

Improved insulation and better heating can enhance indoor comfort by maintaining a more consistent temperature and reducing any drafts.

A higher EPC rating and well insulated home can increase the market value of your property, as energy efficient homes are in demand these days and may attract more premium prices.

There are various government grants available for cavity wall insulation as it the leading measure for home insulation in Scotland.

Cavity Wall Insulation Grants For People on Benefits

ECO 4 Scheme

The largest government grant scheme in the United Kingdom, both in terms of funding volume and product diversity, is the Energy Company Obligation, commonly known as the ECO 4 scheme. With over £4 billion allocated, this scheme is specifically designed to address fuel poverty by enhancing energy efficiency and heating systems in homes across the UK.

The ECO 4 scheme has been operational since April 2022, and the current funding of £4 billion extends until March 2026, ensuring ample resources for eligible applicants. To qualify for the standard version of the ECO 4 scheme, it is mandatory to receive some form of income-related benefits. This includes individuals with disabilities and pensioners who meet the receive either pension credit guarantee or pension credit savings.

When an eco 4 grant is awarded for cavity wall insulation, loft insulation or external wall insulation for example, you will normally qualify for other products too meaning you can upgrade your central heating system or install some renewables.

Listed below are the main benefits that mean you will qualify for eco 4 funding.

There is however an option for people who work full time or part time on lower incomes below £31,000 per year known as the ECO 4 flex. This scheme is only available in certain local councils.

Cavity Wall Insulation Grants for People on Low Income

ECO 4 Flex Grant

The ECO 4 Flex, or Local Authority Flex, presents an alternative grant option under the ECO 4 scheme aimed at individuals with lower incomes. This program extends financial support to those earning below £31,000 annually and not receiving benefits. Eligibility requires a home with an EPC rating below D, along with meeting additional specified criteria.

This particular grant is accessible for cavity wall insulation in most local council areas throughout Scotland. However, through Insulation Scotland, the LA Flex scheme operates exclusively within the Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire, and North Lanarkshire local council areas. In these areas, our partnered installers are authorised to proceed with installations upon grant approval.

Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan

One of the most renowned grants for home insulation in Scotland is the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan.

Home Energy Scotland extends complimentary guidance on available grants across Scotland, aiming to diminish living expenses and elevate your home’s EPC rating. They offer expert counsel on products with the highest potential to enhance these aspects and assist in identifying funding opportunities for which you are most likely eligible.

Most of their funding is aimed at central heating and renewables, including grants for solar panels, grants for air source heat pumps and grants for electric storage heaters.

In terms of home insulation and in particular cavity wall insulation, Home Energy Scotland has a grant called the Warmer Homes Scotland programme. This grant provides funding of up to £10,000 or more on all insulation and heating products, which specifically for home insulation provides a discount for up to £1,500.

The installers we collaborate with do not facilitate HES grants, and it’s challenging to find independent insulation installers in Scotland that do.

To proceed, you’ll need to locate TrustMark approved installers specialising in the specific type of home insulation you require. Keep in mind that funds are typically disbursed to installers several months post installation, which may deter smaller insulation providers from offering quotes.

Anyone can seek advice from Home Energy Scotland and apply for one of their schemes based on their product preferences. Unlike other schemes where specific criteria, such as income-related benefits for the ECO 4 scheme or specific EPC ratings or council tax bands for the Great British Insulation scheme, are mandatory, there are no such restrictions with HES schemes.

We are happy to assist with this either on the phone or during a home survey, by carrying out a professional inspection.
