John and Paul were brilliant getting the insulation in. Installation and clean up all done in half a day (less, even) and the Knauf wool has made a notable improvement on the cold spots I had under the eves. I also found John to be particularly reassuring on the initial quote and measurement; I mentioned having condensation issues and so he did an inspection of the timbers while measuring the loft space, which other quoters had not bothered to look at. I felt that John actually listened to my concerns and the whole reason I was having the insulation looked at. The whole process was painless and I would absolutely recommend them.

Roof Insulation Bearsden and Milngavie

Roof insulation is a protective blanket over your house or building. It is fixed between the roof deck and the roof’s surface and is used to reduce the heat transfer from the interior to the exterior. During warm climates, a combination of roof technology can be used along with the insulation to reduce the energy bills that arise when you try to moderate the building’s temperature.

Roof Insulation is of two types – It can either be cold insulation or warm insulation.

In warm insulation, the insulating material is placed directly under the roof. It is done to reduce the loss of heat, to prevent your home from being excessively cold in the winter or hot in the summer.

Cold insulation is comparatively inexpensive and has its downsides. It is usually placed on the ceiling of the top floor.

How does it work?

Roof insulation is a barrier of different materials in your roof space. It slows down the heat transfer between the place you live in and the outside environment, creating a cooler home in summer and a warmer one in winter. Insulating between the joists helps keep the warmth in your rooms below while the loft remains cold, whereas insulating the rafters keeps both the rooms and loft warm.

The insulating materials used are bad conductors of heat and hence reduces the loss of heat by conduction. The material also does not allow the air to circulate in the cavity and therefore reduce the heat loss by convection.

Types of Roof Insulation

Allowing us to make sure your render is capable of supporting an EWI installation. Should your render be strong enough, we will smoothen it in preparation for installation or completely remove it if required.

Wood Fibre

Wood fibre is organic in nature and is composed of wood, vegetable fibres, or cane mixed with binder and fillers. The insulation will either be asphalt coated or asphalt-impregnated to ensure more moisture resistance.

Perlite Insulation

Perlite insulation board consists of expanded, inorganic siliceous volcanic glass and perlite mixed with organic binder and fibres. The upper surface of the insulation board has a proprietary coating or an asphalt coating developed to limit adhesive.

Polyisocyanurate

Polyisocyanurate is a foam plastic insulating core applied between organic or inorganic glass-fibre mat facers, glass-fibre-reinforced aluminum foil facers, or felt facers. A blowing agent free of chlorine helps to expand the  material and create a closed structure that provides the insulation with high thermal resistance. Air diffusion to the cell structure of the insulation can reduce the thermal resistance slightly, but the insulation efficiency will remain untouched.

Polystyrene Insulation

Polystyrene insulation can be made either by expanding or extruding. In expanded polystyrene, the polystyrene polymer is impregnated with a suitable agent. Exposure to heat expands the material and it is then molded to a closed-cell, uniform insulating material. The density of expanded.

olystyrene

Polystyrene can range between 0.70 to 3 pounds per cubic foot. A minimum density of 1.25 PCF is required by most roof covering manufacturers.

In extruded polystyrene, blended polystyrene polymer is heated and then run through an extrusion process. The material expands when exposed to atmospheric conditions and creates a closed-cell structure. The density of extruded polystyrene can range between 1.3 to 2.2 PCF.

Cellular Glass Insulation

Cellular glass insulation consists of a combination of crushed glass and a suitable foaming agent. The components are first mixed together, then placed in a mold. It is then heated to melt the glass and decompose the foaming agent. This process results in the expansion of the mixture and creates a close celled, uniformly connected insulating material.

Gypsum Board Insulation

Gypsum board is a non-combustible, water-resistant, non-structural, treated gypsum panel. These boards have a proprietary, non-asphaltic, single side coating to ensure enhanced roof-membrane adhesion. Gypsum board usually serves as a cover board on top of foam-plastic insulations, as a vapor-retarder substrate, or as a thermal membrane on a steel deck.

Benefits of Roof Insulation

Roof insulation might be one of the best decisions you make for your home and yourself. There are a lot of benefits that you can gain through the insulation of your roof, some of them being.

Energy & cost efficiency – About 25 percent of the heat loss of a building is through its roof. The installation of efficient insulation helps to provide both money and energy.

It provides an extra layer of protection – It can prevent any potential damages that can arise due to ice dams and moisture, and increase the life of your roofing.

It reduces carbon footprint – according to studies conducted by various institutions, efficient roof insulation helps to reduce CO2 emissions and help fight air pollution.

It prevents mould growths – Insulation is the best measure to prevent the forming of moulds. It helps to manage the moisture content and temperature of your home, two factors that affect the mould growth

Opting for roof insulation may feel expensive at the beginning, but in some time you will be saving more than you imagined.

Roof Insulation Cost

Insulating the roof is one of the smartest investments you can make. As heat rises at your place, at least 25 percent of the heat is lost through an uninsulated roof. Taking the high energy costs and grants into consideration, the investment can be earned back pretty fast. The cost to install roof insulation varies depending on the materials used and the square meterage, costs for insulation do tend to vary depending on product, we will explain this in more detail in person. If you would like to know a specific cost for insulating your roof, then it’s best to get in touch and arrange a free home survey.

Room in Roof Insulation Bearsden and Milngavie

Room in roof insulation is generally the process of insulation boards being installed between your roofs rafters to seal the roof and walls tight and retain more heat inside the home.

The term room in roof insulation is used for homes with a loft that is used as a living space or room. If you do not use your loft as a living space you would be better off installing standard loft insulation.

Generally it is best to install mineral wool, foil insulation or rigid insulation boards for room in roof insulation.

We always install sustainable insulation for maximum performance reducing heat loss by up to 25%.
