John and the Team at Insulation Scotland (Edinburgh) Limited were fantastic. Thorough but quick survey and consultation followed by a quotation that arrived when promised and at a competitive price. We chose them because of John's friendly demeanor. A team of 3 blitzed a reasonably big job in less than a day. Some of the walls in attic got their first insulation (you can see in the before and after images) and the flooring was re-laid and added to in some places, and completely replaced in others. All waste was bagged up and taken away. Everything was wiped down, hoovered and generally spick and span. We couldn't be happier, and would confidently recommend John and his team.Posted on Trustindex![]()

Edit 3/3/26: the owner came back to me eventually and said he would pay for the damage. Once I sent the invoice of the plumber he promptly paid. All solved. Great communication. They sent someone in the morning to quote for a loft insulation job. Told him to be careful in the attic as we have the water heating manifold with pipes. Did the survei in 20 minutes. Come the evening the boiler had lost pressure, low and behold he had knocked a pipe from the manifold and it is actively leaking. Will not return my calls.Posted on Trustindex![]()

Fantastic experience all round. John was very kind and friendly. Communication was prompt and easy. He explained how to apply for a grant from the govt. When it didnt work out for us he even kindly gave us a huge discount! Work was done very quick (approx an hour for us) and cleaned up after themselves leaving the house spotless. This was a completely stress free experience. We definitely recommend insulation scotia !Posted on Trustindex![]()

Insulation Scotland installed loft insulation for us, everything was done as promised, bills seem to have dropped and our house feels warmer, very happy

These images are from an installation of YBS superquilt multi foil insulation installed in the loft of a recording studio in Edinburgh.
The goal was to keep the roof and studio cooler, especially the recording booth’s which can get very warm in summer months.
YBS superquilt foil insulation will achieve this, as well as retaining more heat and keeping the building warmer the rest of the year.
Like many of the lofts we work in, this one already had mineral wool on the floor, which combined with superfoil insulation, ensures you get the maximum insulation performance from your roof and loft area.

This was for a home in Edinburgh, to ensure a functional loft space was warm enough for use.
Foil insulation also provides extra space vs other materials, which meant the loft area square meterage was utilised to its maximum.
Foil insulation also makes areas cooler in the summer and with this area being used by a family, this allows for an additional functional area of the home all year round.
Once again, YBS super quilt multi foil was used for this installation.

SuperFOIL insulation is a high performance, multi layer reflective insulation product designed to improve the thermal efficiency of buildings. It consists of multiple layers of reflective foil, insulating wadding, and breathable membranes that work together to reduce heat loss, reflect radiant heat, and help control condensation.
Unlike traditional insulation materials that primarily slow heat transfer through thickness, SuperFOIL combines reflective technology with insulating layers to help reduce heat loss through radiation, conduction, and convection.
We tend to almost always install YBS SuperQuilt insulation, which almost all of the information on this blog relates to.
SuperFOIL products combine three forms of insulation:
Reflective insulation – reflects radiant heat back into the building.
Thermal insulation – reduces conductive heat transfer through the structure.
Vapour control – helps manage moisture and reduce the risk of condensation.
SuperFOIL insulation works by combining multiple layers of reflective foil, insulating wadding, and air gap technology to reduce heat transfer in three ways: radiation, conduction, and convection.
Reflects Radiant Heat – The outer foil layers reflect radiant heat back towards its source. During winter, heat generated inside the building is reflected back indoors, while in summer, external heat is reflected away from the building.
Reduces Conductive Heat Loss – The internal layers of insulating wadding create a barrier that slows the transfer of heat through the material itself, helping to keep warm air inside during colder months.
Minimises Convection – When installed with the recommended air gaps, SuperFOIL helps reduce air movement around the insulation. This limits heat loss caused by convection currents.
Controls Moisture and Condensation – Many SuperFOIL products incorporate vapour-resistant or breathable layers that help manage moisture movement through the building structure, reducing the risk of condensation and damp related issues.
By tackling all three forms of heat transfer radiation, conduction, and convection, SuperFOIL provides a comprehensive insulation solution for roofs, walls, floors, and other building applications.
Reflective foil insulation performs best when installed with adjacent air spaces. These air gaps allow the foil surfaces to reflect radiant heat effectively. Without them, the reflective benefits are significantly reduced.
YBS SuperQuilt is a multi-layer reflective insulation designed to improve thermal performance while saving space. It combines 19 layers of aluminium foil, insulating wadding, and foam to provide insulation, vapour control, and airtightness in a single product.
Listed below are some of the main benefits of installing superquilt foil insulation.
At around 40mm thick before installation, SuperQuilt can provide high thermal performance without the thickness of traditional insulation materials, making it ideal for loft conversions and areas where space is limited.
The multi-layer construction helps reduce heat loss by addressing radiant, conductive, and convective heat transfer. It's reflective outer layers enhance overall thermal efficiency.
When properly taped and sealed, SuperQuilt acts as a vapour control layer, helping to reduce moisture movement and the risk of condensation within the building structure.
Lightweight, flexible, and easy to cut, SuperQuilt can often be installed more quickly than rigid insulation boards and requires no specialist equipment.
Can be used in roofs, lofts, walls, floors, extensions, timber-frame buildings, and refurbishment projects. It is suitable for both new-build and retrofit installations.
Unlike some traditional insulation materials, SuperQuilt does not absorb moisture, helping it maintain its thermal performance over time.
As well as SuperQuilt foil insulation, SuperFOIL offers a wide range of multi-foil insulation products designed for different loft and roof applications. The most suitable type depends on the available space, desired thermal performance, and whether the project is a new build or retrofit.
A popular choice for lofts and roofs, offering a balance of thermal performance and thickness. Suitable for many retrofit and new build projects where space is limited.
A higher performance multi-foil insulation with additional layers for improved thermal efficiency. Often used in roofs, loft conversions, and timber frame constructions.
One of the highest-performing SuperFOIL products, featuring multiple reflective and insulating layers. Ideal for projects requiring maximum thermal performance with minimal thickness.
Although designed primarily for floors, it can be used alongside loft insulation systems where a complete building insulation solution is required.
A reflective vapour control membrane used in conjunction with insulation systems to help reduce condensation and improve airtightness.
For homeowners looking to maximise insulation performance while preserving internal space, YBS SuperQuilt is a popular alternative or supplement to traditional mineral wool and rigid board insulation systems.
*Loft type (cold roof or warm roof)
*Available installation space
*Required thermal performance (U-value)
*Building regulations requirements
*Whether the insulation will be used alone or with additional insulation materials
*Loft floors
*Pitched roofs
*Loft conversions
*Attic storage areas
*Timber-frame roof structures
For the best results, the chosen SuperFOIL product should be installed according to the manufacturer’s guidance, including the recommended air gaps that allow the reflective layers to perform effectively.
If you’re planning to install SuperFOIL insulation in your loft, roof, walls, or floor, it’s recommended to use a SuperFOIL Approved Installer. These installers receive specialist training on the correct installation of SuperFOIL products and are part of a UK wide network supported by the manufacturer. Proper installation is particularly important with multi-foil insulation, as performance depends on correct fitting, sealing, and ventilation details.
At Insulation Scotland Ltd, our installers are experienced installing the range of super foil insulation materials on roofs and loft spaces. Our experienced SuperFOIL insulation installers provide professional loft and roof insulation services for homes and commercial properties. Using high performance multi-foil insulation systems, we help improve energy efficiency, reduce heat loss, and create warmer, more comfortable buildings. From loft conversions to full roof insulation projects, our trained installers ensure every installation meets the highest standards for thermal performance and durability.
Super foil insulation products such as SuperQuilt only achieve their stated performance only when installed according to the manufacturer’s specification, including the required air gaps and sealed joints. Building professionals and building science discussions often emphasise that installation quality is critical to achieving the expected thermal performance.
For homeowners looking to maximise insulation while preserving internal space, YBS SuperQuilt is commonly used either as a standalone solution in approved constructions or alongside traditional insulation materials to meet specific thermal performance targets.
YBS SuperQuilt is typically installed beneath roof rafters, on walls, or across loft structures. Correct installation is essential to achieve the advertised thermal performance and vapour-control benefits.
Ensure rafters, joists, or wall studs are clean, dry, and structurally sound.
Measure the area and cut the SuperQuilt to size using sharp scissors or a utility knife.
Roll out the SuperQuilt either horizontally or vertically, depending on the rafter layout.
Pull the insulation taut and staple it securely to the rafters or timber framework at regular intervals.
Overlap adjoining sheets by at least 50mm.
Tape all joints and seams using foil insulation tape to create a continuous airtight layer.
Carefully cut around rafters, wall plates, and other obstructions.
Tape and seal all perimeter details to maintain airtightness and vapour control.
Install timber counter battens over the SuperQuilt to create an air space.
Typical battens are approximately 25mm × 38mm, although requirements may vary by application. Air gaps are important because reflective foil insulation performs best when adjacent to still air spaces.
Fix plasterboard or another internal lining to the battens.
When properly taped and sealed, SuperQuilt can act as a vapour control layer, reducing the need for a separate membrane in many installations.
*Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific roof, wall, floor, or loft application.
*Ensure all joints are taped and sealed.
*Maintain recommended ventilation where required.
*Do not compress the insulation excessively.
Check local building regulations and thermal performance requirements before installation.
